Why Women-Only Sober Living?

A house full of women may be a nightmare for some, but for women in recovery, sharing a home with other women who are dedicated to the same goal can be the difference-maker between recovery success and a return to their old lives and ways. A sober home exclusively for women offers many benefits:

• • Tailored support. The staff and other residents understand the unique responsibilities, stresses, and emotional complicatedness of recovery for women. They get it. This is a place where you can feel understood.
  • Structure a women can appreciate. House rules mean everyone is on the same page about what positive, community-supported recovery looks like at Second Chances. Shared chores mean everyone works together to keep the home clean and orderly, efforts that contribute to the peace, self-control and focus women in recovery need to do well. In addition to assigned duties, the accountability provided by our staff and our Phase Program help keep Second Chances women on the straight and narrow path.
  • Safety and comfort. Some of our women have experienced abuse at the hands of men. A women-only sober living environment allows them to focus on working through their trauma without the anxiety produced by having someone of the opposite gender in close quarters. 
  • Minimal distractions. Romantic relationships, especially those begun in the midst of recovery, can distract women from the important business of healing and can even in some cases trigger relapse. Second Chances’s women’s home is designed to help women prioritize their recoveries so they can one day be healthy people in healthy relationships.
  • Communal healing. There’s just something about the listening, compassion, and help women provide each other that makes the recovery process more complete. Life together means unique opportunities to give and receive that women doing recovery on their own don’t always have access to.

• Open Arms. Second Chances accepts women with just one day of sobriety, as long as they are committed to pursuing recovery. 
• Compassionate, caring in-house staff. Female house managers with life experience in recovery are available 24-7.
• A secure home. Our women’s home is located in a safe, quiet neighborhood. No one who has not been approved by our staff is allowed on the premises. 
• Rx support. Medications, which can be another source of danger for the recovering addict, are distributed as needed so that residents are supported in using these medications for their benefit, as a doctor has prescribed.
• Our Three-Phase Program. Our Three Phase Program balances support with freedom, allowing our residents to build the confidence they need to do life on their own again. Clear phase objectives, or goals, empower our women to work toward measurable achievements. Our phase rewards help to motivate when the “why bother?” slump makes doing life and recovery work hard. 
• Supportive community. Shared household duties. Organized outings by other residents and staff. In-house dinners and meetings. You never have to do life alone at Second Chances.

Sober Living for Pregnant Women

Pregnant and in recovery? We can help. Second Chances has supported a number of women through their pregnancies and deliveries. Our women’s home, A House Called Beautiful, is a refuge for women who want to change their lives and those of their children. How does our women’s home provide additional support to women in pregnancy?

• We’re here for your baby, too. At Second Chances, infants are welcome to stay with their moms.
• Zero time limits. It can be challenging to work through the recovery process while also riding the mental, physical and emotional rollercoaster of pregnancy. As a result, many women find they need to extend their sober living stay. At Second Chances, there are no time limits on a woman’s residency. As long as she is in compliance with the house rules and working her recovery, she can stay as long as she wants.
• A community of mothers. It’s often the case that the house manager and other residents are already moms themselves. Pregnant women and mothers with new babies can enjoy the advice, help and support of other women in the home who have “been there and done that” and can bring the encouragement of experience to the table. 
• Compassionate mentoring. Recovery can be overwhelming, as can pregnancy and new motherhood. Women in recovery are often saddled with heavy emotional baggage, such as guilt over the potential side effects of their substance abuse on the child, as well as with intense fears about the future. Our staff are available to support our pregnant residents as they make appointments with their doctors and therapists and pull together a plan for the next stage of their lives with their recovery teams.
